Cochins International Summer Show Summary
By Tom Roebuck, Judge
August 12, 2014
"General Comments:
1. Summer is a tough time to have birds in condition. That is taken into consideration as much as possible, however condition carries a lot of weight when evaluating a bird in competition.
2. Trim the beaks on your birds! If you are going through all the trouble to prep a bird for show, why wouldn’t you trim the beak? It enhances the look of the head and a long beak lends itself to making the bird look crow headed.
3. It’s tough to judge a chicken from a photo. This impacts the accuracy of some of my comments because some of the birds aren’t posed in the same manner as the others. It’s tough to tell much about a bird that’s squatting down in a photo. I do realize how difficult it is to get a good picture of a chicken.
4. I tried not to be too negative in my comments, but every bird, no matter if raised by a Master Breeder or someone new to this hobby has flaws. There are no perfect birds. There are some that get awfully darn close, but a good breeder is his or her birds’ own worst critic, always striving for perfection. I thought it was important to point out what flaws I saw in these birds entered based upon their photos."

4. Good foot color
Negative Aspects
1. Shafting in wing bay/wing covert areas
2. Head is a little long
3. Pale in face
4. Overall, lacing isn’t round enough and shows a pointiness rather than a nice round lacing format. Increased width of feather will help with this but time and judicious selective breeding will get you where you want to go.
5. Some mossiness in cushion but not too bad.
Wing color/patterns not correct. Primaries should be black with lower edge a rich golden bay. Secondaries are closer to being correct. Lots of things to focus on with patterned varieties."
