"First, I want to thank you for the honor and privilege of judging your 2103 Summer On Line show. The variety of photos gives a well rounded view of each entry. Some very nice birds were entered. I think this is a very good opportunity for exhibitors and breeders to get a comparison to other birds, they might not otherwise get a chance to, due to the great distances in locations. It also from my perspective, gives the Judge a chance to spend the time to fully evaluate each area, including the smallest details, which due to time constraints in a show, are limited.
I also want to thank everyone for their patience, and apologize for the amount of time that it took to complete this show. Between a full time job, chores at home, judging assignments, and being the Poultry Chairman at the Fair (Not to mention, a single Dad of a 16 yr old daughter), I had very few evenings to be able to sit down and fully evaluate the entries.
One of the areas I want to touch on, are the photos themselves. Being that this is an “on line” show, it is based tremendously on the quality of photos, as much as the quality of the birds themselves. There were some otherwise very nice birds, that may have placed differently if there were clear and well positioned photos to accompany them.
Another area that was a bit of a concern is the amount of photos of wet feathers. Whether on line, or in a showroom, this severely detracts from the appearance and condition of the feathers.
I hope this continues to grow in entries and success."

Adult Division / Bantam Class:
Entry #1 - Red Cock: RV, by Joanie Fullerton
“Head is too long and lacking in depth. Beak could use a trim, but is still too long and not as stout as called for. Breast and Body is lacking in depth and roundness, forming more of a “V” shape. Also lacking in width over the top across the back, pinching as it goes into the tail. Tail is lacking in width and fullness, and feathers are a bit narrow. Wings are carried loose and low, and difficult to tell as they weren’t spread very well, but appear to be weak in the joint. Foot feathering appears to be lacking in fullness and out of condition.
Color is lacking in richness, resembling more of a New Hampshire Red, and uneven with the hackle and saddle being lighter than the wingbows.”

Entry #2 - Red Pullet: BV, by Joanie Fullerton
“Head is lacking in depth and width. Tips on comb could be more defined. Beak is too long and lacking in stoutness. Eye is a bit light in color. Breast is a bit fuller than our male, but still lacks in depth and roundness. She carries her depth further into the lower rear portion of her body, forming a more rounded and balanced shape. I would like to see more width over the top throughout the body. Her cushion carries more fullness, but then slopes off into the rear of the tail. Carries more depth than our male, but still lacking. She has stronger wings and holds them up tighter into the body. Foot feathering is full, but a bit short and frayed. I would watch the lightish coloring of the feet.
Color is much closer to what the Standard calls for, however is still a bit light. Excessive black mealiness in surface color of wing fronts.”

Entry #5 - Black Cock: RV, by Craig Hansen
“Nice width and depth to the head. Comb tips could be more defined, and lacking balance between the blade and tips. Beak needs trimmed, but stout with a good curve. Eyes are a tad light in color. Breast is full and carries good depth. However, we lose balance of body in the cushion and tail area, which is short and lacking in fullness. Nice width of body throughout. Wings are held too loose and too low. Very nice feather quality and condition throughout. Foot picture is unviewable, but from other photos, feathers appear to be a bit short, but full.”

Entry #13 - Black Pullet: BV - CHAMPION ADULT BANTAM, by Larry Margitas
“Head is very full, with really nice width and depth. Comb appears to be very balanced on the skull, but tips could be a bit more defined. Not a clear view, but eye color seems to be good. Very Nice fullness and depth of breast, and she carries that fullness and depth throughout the cushion and tail. Slopes off just a little in the tail area, but not bad. Here’s where better photos come into play. In both the front and top view, she appears to be lacking in width, however I think it’s just poor positioning, because the full body photo, doesn’t lead me to believe that. Wings are held up nicely, high and tight. Primaries and secondaries are very balanced in the wing spread photo. Feather quality and condition is very nice throughout. Again, the foot feathering photo is not real clear, but appears to be full, but a bit short. And again, I would watch the foot coloring on this pullet.”

Entry #6 - Columbian Cockerel:
“Head and beak are a bit too long. Comb is slightly too large in the front, and tips could be more defined. Eye color (and we very rarely see this) is a bit too dark *as a breeder, I’d rather have too dark, than too light*. Breast is nice and full in the front, but lacks depth and roundness. Cushion and tail are nice and round, but lack the fullness and depth to balance out the bird. Good width across the shoulders but tapers over the top severely into a pinched tail. Wings are carried too low and a bit loose, and have a slight gap between the primaries and secondaries. Feathers are dry and frayed throughout. Foot feathering again appears to be full, but too short and frayed.
Color is generally pretty good. The black striping should extend a bit further into the lower saddle feathers (2/3rds of the feather). In the primaries, the white edge should extend the entire length of the feather, and the black have no white leaking into it. And in the secondaries, the white should be solid white, and the black, solid black. *I raised Buff Brahmas, so I’m very familiar with the difficulties of good Columbian wing color, but it is possible* ;)”

Entry #8 - Birchen Cock: RV, by Craig Hansen
“Head has good depth. Beak needs trimmed, but I still a bit too long. Comb is good size, but lacks definition of the tips. Wattles are on the smallish side. Eye color is slightly light. Breast and body lack depth and roundness, again showing a bird that has more of a “V” shape than the desired round shape when viewed from a side profile. In the profile view, the cushion and tail are full and round, but the head is held too low and he is lacking in back, giving him a very unbalanced topline. He’s already lacking in width across the shoulders and front, and loses even more width over the top across the back and tail. Wings are carried too low, but are balanced when spread. Foot photo is very blurry, but I can see that the middle toe is severly lacking in feathers. Outter toes appear to be sufficiently feathered. Overall feather quality and condition appear to be rather good.
Color is severely lacking the white throughout the top of the bird. The back, saddle and wingbows are almost completely void of any white, and he is also lacking in breast lacing. Remember, the top half of the male birchen should be more of a overall white with some black striping in hackle and saddle.”

Entry #10 - Birchen Cock: BV, by Nancy Compton
“Head is short and has decent width, but lacks a bit in depth. In the full profile view, the beak appears to have been damaged at one time, and the bottom is longer than the top. The comb, specifically the blade is too small and the tips lack in definition and balance. Wattles are too small. Eyes are too light. Again, the breast and body lack in depth and roundness, but appears better balanced than our previous entry. Breast and shoulders have good width over the top, but narrows over the back and through the cushion and tail. Decent topline through the cushion, but the tail falls short and fails to carry the fullness, and also the depth called for in the Standard. Wings are carried too low, and slightly loose. I would have liked to see the wing spread more, but it still appears to be a bit of gaps in the secondaries, and the primaries seem to have the tips worn off. Foot feathering is very full, but is a bit frayed closer to the foot. Overall feather quality is rather nice.
Color is pretty nice, including good breast lacing. I would like to see better and more defined black striping in the hackle.”

Entry #14 - White Pullet: BV - RESERVE CHAMPION ADULT BANTAM, by Larry Margitas
“Head is too long and lacks a bit in depth and slightly in width. Her beak is too long and not very stout. Also needs to be trimmed. Comb is slightly small, and the tips could have better balance. Eye color is pretty good. Breast is decent, but lacks in fullness and a bit in depth. Shoulders have decent width, but that width doesn’t carry throughout, and the back pinches severely before transitioning into the cushion and tail forming more of the shape of a number eight rather than the round shape as per the Standard. Cushion and tail have decent width and depth, but could have more. Wings are carried low, and are held slightly loose. The wing spread photo really only shows the primaries, but there appears to be a gap between the primaries and secondaries. Foot feathering appears to be full and of good length, but has a slight amount of debris on it. Overall feather condition appears to be pretty good.”

Entry #15 - White Cock: RV, by Larry Margitas
“This entry unfortunately only has a couple of good pictures, making it extremely difficult to do a full and complete evaluation, but I’ll do my best.
Head has very good length and depth, but is a bit coarse and puffy appearing. Beak is probably the best of all the entries. Short, good curvature, and very stout. Comb is decent sized, but the blade should be larger to be more balanced with the tips. Eye color is slightly light. Breast has good fullness, but could carry his depth a bit further. Head is carried slightly low and there is a break in the transition from the back into the cushion. Tail starts out ok, but then slopes severely, lacking the fullness and roundness called for in the Standard. It is also lacking in depth. Very difficult to tell from photos, but appears to be lacking in body width throughout. Wings are carried too low, but seem to be folded pretty close. Foot feathering seems to be full based on profile photo. Overall feather condition appears to be good.
Looks like some possible yellowing over the top of the hackle and back.”

Entry #20 - Mottled Pullet
“Head is long and lacking in depth. Beak is long and lacking in curvature. Comb is lacking definition and number of tips. Eye color is pretty good. Breast is full, but lacks in both depth and width. In the profile photo, head is a bit low, but it doesn’t appear to be set too low in the frontal photo. Cushion appears to be lacking in fullness, and the tail slopes off, lacking in fullness and depth. Even though the breast and shoulders lack in width, body appears to gain a bit in width over the top, but then pinches up again as it gets into the cushion and tail area. Wings appear to be carried high and tight, but we do some minor gaps in the feathers as the wing is spread. Very disappointing to see wet foot feathering in the photo. Overall feather condition seems to be ok, however debris is stuck to it in a couple of the photos.
Color is severely lacking in mottling throughout the bird, being almost non-existent in many areas. Also seems to be some foreign red/brownish color in the head and neck area.”

Entry #3 - Splash Cock (Non-Standard Variety):
“Head is pretty good, only lacking slightly in width and possibly just a bit long. Beak is pretty good also. Comb is too small and lacks in definition of tips. Appears to have a bit of curvature at the back end of the blade. Eye color is pretty good. His breast is full and round towards the upper half, but lacks depth in the lower section. Breast is lacking in width, bit increases in width as we continue down the body, but once again pinches and lacks width as we go into the cushion and tail area. From the profile view, cushion is full, but tail again slopes off and lacks the full and round shape. Tail has a few feathers that are a bit harder than desired, and is also very lacking in depth. Wings are carried slightly low and loose. Wing is weak with some gaps between the primary and secondary feathers. Foot feathering is full and of good length, but are stained and a bit dirty. Overall feather condition looks a bit tattered in several areas.
Color – Lots of foreign color throughout the hackle and a bit into the wingbows also. *Be careful. If it is rust, as I suspect, that is a DQ*”

Entry #9 - Splash Hen (Non-Standard Variety): BV, by Stephanie Kendall
“Head is very long and lacking in depth and width. Also appears to have a bald spot on the right side. Beak is too long and lacks in curvature and stoutness. Comb could use some balance and evenness in the tips. Eye color is very good. Breast is very full and round, and carries depth very well. Breast and body lack just slightly in width over the top, but the width it does show is very well balanced throughout. Body is too long, giving more of an Oval shape, rather than a balanced round shape. Cushion and tail is just slightly low, but very full and round, and again carries very nice depth. However, there is a lot of fluff showing through the feathers. Wings are a folded a bit loose, but carried nice and high, however the tips of the secondaries should be concealed by the cushion plumage. When spread there is a gap between the primaries and secondaries. Foot feathering is lacking in abundance and length, and is stained and a bit tattered. Overall feather condition is average.
Color - Not enough slaty blue throughout the bird.”

Entry #22 - Splash Cock (Non-Standard Variety): RV, by Mandy Malin
“Head has good length, but is lacking in depth. Beak is too long. Comb is a bit small, and the tips are lacking in numbers, and short and bulky. The back of blade also appears to have a bit of a twist to it. Eye color is very good. Breast lacks a bit in width, and lacks depth. Body just slightly lacks in depth. Shoulders have decent width, but tapers in towards the back. Cushion and tail slightly lack in width. From the profile view, cushion is lacking a bit in fullness, and the tail slopes off, lacking the fullness and roundness, but is only slightly lacking in depth. Wings are held too loose and carried too low. Bottoms of the feet show evidence of injury. Foot feathering is full and of really good length. Overall feather condition is average, except in the foot feather photo the leg feathers are wet, which is a substantial point reduction.
Color is too light, lacking the slaty blue, especially in the lower half of the body.”

Entry #11 - Mille Fleur Hen (Non-Standard Variety):
“Head is a bit long and lacking in width. Beak is a bit too long. Comb is lacking in defined points, and the back of the blade goes up away from the head. Eye color is good. Breast is flat in the front and lacks in depth and width. Shoulders have decent width, but the body tapers in slightly over the top towards the back. Body is bit long. Cushion rises nicely into the tail, but the tail is a bit short, and lacking in width and depth. Wings are carried pretty good as far as height, but are held just a bit loose and have a bit of a gap between the primaries and secondaries. Foot feathering is lacking in both fullness and length. Feather condition throughout is pretty good, but you can see some of the feathers are a bit frayed in a few areas.
Color – First off, let me say that for this very rare color on a Cochin, I am impressed. However, when judging, I have to compare it against the Standard, and not comparatively to other Mille Fleur Cochins out there. The head is actually closer to white. As we get into the neck, the black is too heavy, but as we get into the breast and body, the black V barring is actually lacking. The back is the best as far as the black V barring, but the white spangles are to large. Wings have a couple of almost pure white feathers and the others have the colors scattered throughout.”

“Head appears to have decent width and depth, but the beak is too long. Comb is difficult to see, but looks decent. Eye color is just slightly light. Breast has good roundness, depth and width. Back and body have good width, but pinches over the top as it transitions into the tail. From the profile view, shoulders are held too high, very short back, and transitions into a tail that severely slopes off, and is very lacking in fullness, roundness, and width, giving the bird a very unbalanced look. The body does carry very good width from the breast, all the way through the tail. Wings are held high enough, but are held very loosely and when spread has gaps in the primaries and between the primaries and secondaries. Foot feathering is very difficult to evaluate, because again, we have wet feathers. I would also watch the leg/foot coloring as it is lacking in yellow. Feather condition throughout appears pretty good, but has some frayed feathers in the cushion and tail area.
Color overall is a good shade of blue, but is uneven in some areas (dark feathers) and is severely lacking in white spangles. White tips are completely missing from the wing feather tips.”

“Head has good depth, width, and length, but beak is too long. Comb and wattles both are good sized, but the comb has an extra tip, and the tips are very unbalanced. Breast is lacking in fullness and depth, but has good width. Shoulders and back are lacking in width, but actually increases in width over the top as we transition into the cushion but pinches again the tail. Tail is very lacking in width and appears to have a couple feathers that are harder than desired. From the profile view, headset is pretty good and transitions nicely into the cushion, but then once we get into the tail, it severely flattens out and is completely lacking in fullness and depth. Body is lacking in depth, forming a “V” shape. Wings are carried too low, and when spread has some very wide gaps in the feathers. Foot feathering appears to abundant and of good length, but again the feathers are wet.
Color is a good shade of blue, but is very lacking in mottling. Wings and foot feathering is void of any white tips.”
“Head has good depth, width, and length, but beak is too long. Comb and wattles both are good sized, but the comb has an extra tip, and the tips are very unbalanced. Breast is lacking in fullness and depth, but has good width. "Preface* The dilemma here is that the only real good photo is the full profile photo. The remaining photos are all either way too small, or have too much light reflecting off of the feathers making it appear to be mottled. As with any show, I can only judge by what I can see.*
Head appears to have good depth and length, but I can’t see the head photo enough to further evaluate other aspects. The same with the beak, comb, and eye color. Just unable to see it enough to evaluate. Breast is full and round, but lacks slightly in depth. Shoulders and Body lack slightly in width, giving the overall top view more of an Oval or rectangle shape, more than the roundness called for in the Standard. Very nice cushion from the profile view. Tail is full but just slopes off slightly, is a bit short, and lacks in depth. Wings are carried nice and high, but appear to be slightly loose and not carried as tight as they could be. However, the primary wing feathers are probably the best in feather quality that I have seen to date!! Foot feathering photo is again extremely small, but from what I can see, appears to be abundant but lacking in length. Overall feather condition appears to be very good.
Color appears to a good deep black with a good sheen, but in many of the photos, the excess light reflecting off of them detracts from the appearance."

"Head has very good depth and length, but lacks slightly in width and prominence of brow over the eyes. Beak is just slightly long, but has good curvature and is nice and stout. Comb is nice and small. Unfortunately, there is not a real good picture of it, but it appears as though it might be missing a point. I want to mention that part of the reason that the comb is not very visible is that the head is very abundantly feathered, which is nice. Eye color appears to be just slightly light. Breast is full, but lacks slightly in depth. The depth appears to increase into the body and is carried very well between the legs and into the abdomen. The shoulders and back appear to have pretty good width, but unfortunately, that width doesn’t continue down into the body, lacking the roundness when viewed from the front. Back is nice and short and rises nicely into the cushion and tail. Unfortunately as it continues, the tail slopes off towards the rear and lacks in roundness and depth. Overall, a pretty well balanced bird. Wings are carried up high into the body, and even though not sufficiently spread in the photo, appear evenly spaced. Foot feathering is slightly lacking in abundance and length. Overall feather quality appears to be abundant and in good condition, but slightly stringy and wing primaries are a bit frayed.
Nice bright, white color."

"Head has good depth and length, but lacks in width. However, even lacking width, it has a good prominence of brow over the eyes. Beak has good length and is very stout, but lacks good curvature. Comb lacks slightly in size and balance of tips towards the front of the comb. Eye color is pretty good. Breast is carried nicely in front, rounded and carrying good depth, but is severely lacking in width. The depth however is not carried throughout the body, into the abdomen area, giving him more of a “V” shape when viewed from the profile. Shoulders are slightly lacking in width and continues to pinch even further into the back. The back has good length, but flattens as it goes into the cushion. Cushion and tail both lack in width. Tail is short and slopes off towards the rear and lacks in roundness and depth. Wings are carried just slightly low, and has some slight gaps between the feathers when spread. Foot feathering is very lacking in abundance and length. Overall feather condition is ok, but has some damage in the primaries and the foot feathering is wet and dirty.
Regarding color, he has quite a bit of brassiness and some slight peppering in the wing feathers."

"Head is very lacking in depth and width, making it appear too long also. Beak is actually good in length, but again, the lack of width and depth in the head makes it appear longer. It is nice and stout with a good curve. Comb is too small and appears to be lacking tips. If they are there, they lack in definition. Eye color is lacking in the reddish color. Breast is full but lacking slightly in depth and width. She lacks width throughout the shoulders, body, cushion, and tail. Back is nice and short and flows nicely into the cushion, but the tail is lacking in fullness and depth. She is also lacking in depth in the abdomen area. Wings are carried nicely, tight and high up against the body, but when spread are very frayed and it appears that a couple of the feathers are not completely finished growing. Foot feathering is lacking in abundance and length. Overall feather condition is good. However as mentioned, the primary wing feathers are very frayed and unfinished, and even the secondaries are a bit frayed. Foot feathering is also wet.
In the full body photo, she appears to have a good sheen to the color."

"Head has very nice depth and length, and is lacking only slightly in width. Beak is a bit long and slightly lacking in curvature. Comb is very small and tips are not viewable, but it does appear to be well balanced. Eye color is excellent. Breast is full, carried forward nicely, and appears to carry width and depth well down into the body. However, could slightly use more roundness. When viewed from the front, body lacks slightly in roundness. Nice width across the shoulders, and carries that width well into the body. Pinches just slightly as she gets into the cushion, but then widens back out through the cushion and tail. Back is very nice and short. Angle is a bit steep as it rises into the cushion, but cushion is extremely full and round as it goes into the tail. Tail slightly slopes off, but is full and carries depth very well. Depth is carried very well through the body and into the lower abdomen area. Wings are carried very well and tight up into the body, and when spread are very full and balanced, with good width of feather. Foot feathering is probably the best seen in the show. Very full, abundant, clean, and has good length. Overall feather condition is excellent.
Color is excellent, with no faults apparent."

"*note* Unfortunately, many of the photos are blurry, which detracts tremendously from an on line show L, but I will evaluate as best as I can with what I can see.
Head appears to have very good depth and length, but lacks severely in width. Beak is extremely long and thin, lacking in stoutness. Comb is small but unable to see well enough to evaluate further. Breast is flat, lacking in roundness, but does have good width and depth. Shoulders have good width which is carried throughout the body and into the cushion and tail. Back appears to be a bit long, but rises nice and full into the cushion. Tail is slightly short and slopes off, but does carry depth nicely. Depth is carried very well through the body and into the lower abdomen area. Wings are carried high up on the body, but slightly loose, and when spread, shows some slight gaps. Good width of feather. The photo of the foot is taken much too closely to be able to evaluate the feathering, but in other photos, it does appear to be full, abundant, and of good length. I would be a little concerned with the feet coloring, as it appears to be lacking in the yellow color. Overall feather condition appears to be good, but a bit loose.
Color has no apparent faults, and in the clear overhead photo, appears to have a good sheen to it."
